Drawing on a growing body of research and large-scale implementation projects, Dr. Scott will share how ongoing, meaningful measurement can help organizations move from intention to impact in SUD care.

Keep reading to learn more about Dr. Scott and her meaningful contributions to improving SUD treatment and community mental healthcare.

Meet Dr. Kelli Scott

Dr. Scott is an Assistant Professor at the Center for Dissemination and Implementation Science, and the Department of Medical Social Sciences, at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Her work sits at the intersection of implementation science, community mental health, and substance use treatment.

Dr. Scott also serves on the American Psychological Association’s Advisory Committee for MBC and the Mental and Behavioral Health Registry and is PI/MPI of several ongoing studies implementing MBC in community opioid treatment programs across Chicagoland and Pennsylvania. Her implementation science and MBC expertise is crucial in her role as a Co-Investigator on a range of projects designed to enhance mental healthcare, and within her role as the evaluator for the New England Addiction Technology Transfer Center, which provides training and technical assistance to the substance use treatment and recovery workforce in the New England region.

From the beginning of her career as a Research Specialist in community mental health clinics in Philadelphia, Dr. Scott saw how challenging it could be for providers to sustain evidence-based interventions when time, training, and supervision are limited. These experiences led her to focus on implementation science, where she works to understand the unique dynamics of each community treatment setting, collaborate with diverse stakeholders, and tailor interventions and implementation strategies accordingly. Her ultimate goal is to improve the quality of care for individuals receiving mental health and substance use treatment by closing the gap between what research shows works and what is delivered in practice.

Research in MBC and SUD

Today, Dr. Scott’s research program is dedicated to scaling evidence-based practices, like MBC, in community mental health and opioid treatment programs. She works closely with clinics, frontline staff, and people in treatment to ensure that evidence-based tools support everyday care.

Through a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-funded K23 Career Development Award, Dr. Scott leads the Measurement-Based Care to Opioid Treatment Programs Project (MBC2OTP), a project dedicated to developing and piloting an MBC protocol tailored to community opioid treatment settings.

Beyond her current trials, Dr. Scott has contributed to a range of publications that highlight practical approaches to implementing evidence-based interventions in substance use and mental health care. This includes co-authoring Using Measurement-Based Care to Enhance Any Treatment (2015), published in Cognitive and Behavioral Practice, which outlines a clear framework for integrating routine outcome measures to guide care in any setting.

Scaling Impact at the HEALing Measurement Center

Dr. Scott’s work reaches beyond individual clinics through her role as Principal Investigator for the HEALing Measurement Center, a major research project funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and part of the NIH’s Helping to End Addiction Long-term® (HEAL) Initiative.

The project focuses on implementing MBC across 20 community opioid treatment programs in Pennsylvania, standardizing measurement practices across diverse sites, and generating robust, real-world data on how MBC impacts engagement, retention, and recovery outcomes in opioid use disorder treatment. Scaling from a small pilot in Chicago, the HEALing Measurement Center is supporting clinics as they embed MBC into routine workflows, using data not only to guide individual patient care, but also to inform policy, funding decisions, and system-level changes.

Advancing SUD Treatment Through MBC

From her foundational research that is driving MBC forward in the industry, to her leadership at the HEALing Measurement Center, Dr. Kelli Scott is playing a pivotal role that supports wide scale adoption of MBC.

On June 4th, join Dr. Scott and leaders from the Yale MBC Collective for our upcoming educational session, where she’ll highlight lessons learned from large-scale implementations and share how organizations can use MBC to improve engagement, demonstrate impact, and inform more personalized, responsive care.

Register today: Advancing Substance Use Disorder Treatment Through Measurement-Based Care, June 4th at 1 PM ET.

Substance use disorder (SUD) treatment is rarely linear.
