Driving Better Outcomes with Measurement-Based Care: Why Therapist Engagement Matters More Than Ever
Measurement-Based Care (MBC) is a proven, evidence-based approach that helps mental health providers track client progress, tailor care in real-time, and ultimately, deliver more effective treatment. At its core, MBC relies on consistent collection and review of client-reported outcome data, empowering clinicians to make data-informed decisions that can dramatically improve clinical outcomes.
But collecting the data is only half the story. What happens after the data is gathered is just as critical. The consistency and frequency at which outcome data is reviewed directly impacts outcomes, seeing as it can help guide clinical discussions and inform treatment decisions.
That’s why, as part of our MBC 2.0 initiative, we’ve released powerful new dashboard features designed to spotlight therapist engagement and make it easier than ever for organizations to support meaningful use of MBC.
The Research Is Clear: Reviewing Client Data Before Sessions Drives Results
A new study published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology confirms what many MBC champions already know: when therapists review client symptom data before sessions, clients get better, faster.
The study analyzed nearly 6,000 sessions between 456 clients and 26 therapist trainees, examining how often therapists reviewed outcome data from the OQ-45 and how that behaviour impacts client progress. The findings were striking:
- Sessions where therapists reviewed data beforehand led to nearly 2x greater symptom improvement than sessions where they didn’t.
- Clients whose data was consistently reviewed before sessions, rather than after session, improved 2.6x faster than those whose data wasn’t reviewed.
- Therapists who regularly reviewed data before sessions saw clients improve more than 3x faster than those who didn’t.
This reinforces what we’ve long known to be true: it’s not simply collecting outcomes, but engaging with them from session to session that drives results.
Introducing Therapist Engagement: A New Era of MBC Insights
To help organizations foster more consistent and effective MBC usage, we’re excited to announce the release of Therapist Engagement visualizations in the Greenspace Analytics dashboards for clinic admins.
These new insights give clinical leaders the tools they need to support therapist adoption of MBC and encourage ongoing interaction with client data. At a glance, clinical leaders can now view:
- Average therapist logins over the past 30 days
- Number of patient result views by therapists
- Weekly trends to track usage over time
- Individual therapist-level data on login frequency and result view activity
This update is a key part of our broader MBC 2.0 vision: empowering organizations to go beyond implementation, and tap into the full potential of MBC—supporting adoption, accountability, and data-driven quality improvement at every level of care.
By shining a light on therapist engagement, we’re helping our partners close the loop on MBC and deliver the best possible outcomes for their communities.
